梅雨: the “plum rain”
梅雨 is read つゆ in everyday speech and ばいう in compounds such as 梅雨前線 (ばいうぜんせん, the seasonal rain front on weather maps). The characters mean “plum rain”: the season comes when plums (梅) ripen.
Each year the Japan Meteorological Agency announces 梅雨入り (the start) and 梅雨明け (the end) region by region. The dates move from year to year. Okinawa’s rainy season starts in May, about a month before most of Japan, and Hokkaido has no clear rainy season at all.
